By nature, we "acquire" languages. It gets complicated when we try to "learn" them.
The natural process of language acquisition begins by listening to others. As children, we listened endlessly to our family members. We created a mental model of the vocabulary and phrases we heard and then stored them in our passive vocabulary, recalling them when the situation called for it. We were corrected in some manner when we got it wrong. If our recall fit the moment, our mental model strengthened. If it did not, we were corrected, or we may have been laughed at, a gentle correction that shaped our understanding. It is this cycle of listening, recalling, speaking and adjusting that builds fluency.
This same environment is needed to learn a new language, one where we can listen to others speak and verbally respond to the degree that we choose to, but as adults, recreating this immersive environment necessary to learn a new language is not easy. Resorting to tutor booking platforms can be expensive, and for most people, going to their target language's country to learn its language is not an option. For those who do, conversing with the locals with only minimal fluency is simply not enough. Attempting to acquire fluency through gamified apps is just another unnatural process.
Dimmi's advantage is its ability to recreate the natural environment that enabled us to become fluent in our native language, thereby enabling us to become fluent in any languages we choose to learn.
Our mission is to provide an environment of constant exposure, low-stakes practice, and immediate feedback. The learner can listen endlessly to others speak, speak whenever they want, and be corrected naturally through conversation.
With today's AI, language immersion is finally possible!
